Spira Day 10: Intro to Chemical/Materials Engineering!

Today marks exactly halfway through camp! We kicked off this week with an introduction to Chemical and Materials Engineering-- aka the engineering that creates all the materials we see everyday!! We taught the girls some of the things they can do in this field and spent the day filled with activities and games related to chemistry. In the morning we created Oobleck-- a fun liquid/solid mixture created by using corn starch and water. This mixture allowed the girls not only to get a little messy but to also observe the properties of liquids and solids and watch the swift transition between both phases with the Oobleck. This activity was then followed by a lunch with Professor Haberstroh in which the girls were able to ask more questions and get to know Professor Haberstroh a little better. The afternoon was then filled with a discussion on what was learned/observed in playing with the Oobeck & a project in which the girls were able to create their own miniature bouncy balls. Today was a fun chemistry filled day!
