Spira 2015 Day 1: Marshmallows, Spaghetti and Eggs, Oh My!
Spira 2015 got off to a great start today! The day began smoothly with pickup at Kennedy Plaza for those taking the Ripta, and drop off at Barus and Holley. We got to know each other a bit better with some name games. We dove into our first project, the Marshmallow Challenge, an activity designed to foster teamwork and collaboration. We followed the activity with its corresponding TED Talk and discussed some of the issues it brought up. We went over our group and individual goals for the summer, along with a living list. We went outside and played some more active games and then ate pizza for lunch. We came back inside after lunch and did a lesson on the physics behind the Egg Drop, the activity we finished the day with. The Egg Drop required pairs of campers to create a contraption to hold an egg to prevent it from breaking when dropped from a certain height (in this case a second story balcony). The winners (calcuated with a special algorithm created by the coordinators) will be announced first thing tomorrow morning! We had so much fun today and can't wait for the rest of the week!
