About Us
What is Spira Engineering Camp?
What is Engineering?
Engineering is the art, skill and profession of applying scientific, mathematical, social, and practical knowledge in order to design and build structures, devices, and systems to improve the lives of people.
Spira is a four week summer engineering camp held at Brown University. We bring together 15 young women from a range of high schools in Rhode Island and help them explore and understand the interdisciplinary nature of Engineering.
Spira is taught by three coordinators, all of whom are undergraduate women studying engineering at Brown University. Our coordinators plan and teach a diverse curriculum which focuses on the interdisciplinary nature of engineering and fundamental problem solving skills. It also emphasizes the development of both analytical and team work skills. Their collaboration with Brown University faculty enables them to take teaching beyond the classroom and demonstrate engineering both in the industry and academia. Our coordinators are dedicated to teaching in a safe and comfortable environment, where every camper can make the most of their experience. We provide lunch and RIPTA passes for all of our students.
Our History
Armed with a vision to make STEM more accessible to young women in Rhode Island, founders Lizzie, Amanda, Natalie and Farzanah (L to R) planned and ran the Spira pilot program summer of 2011.
Since then the program has continued to positively impact girls in Rhode Island. Our coordinators encourage the campers to see each of them as a mentor and a resource both during and after the camp's completion.
