Day 17: S'mores and Solar Ovens

We jumped right into the day today when we got here by starting off in solar oven groups. The campers worked in their groups and discussed the "Do Now" of the day: How would you introduce a product (like a solar oven) to a group of people with a culture that is not yours? After the groups finished constructing their solar ovens, we had each group give a presentation of the features of their oven. We then trekked outside to test our solar ovens with S'mores! We went out to MacMillan field and set up the ovens with the proper ingredients. While the s'mores were a-cooking, we played some frisbee. We then ate some sandwiches for lunch and played some more frisbee. We checked on the s'mores and lo and behold, they were nice and warm! We chowed down and hung out on the field for a bit longer before coming back inside. We communed in the computer lab and began doing research for the final project, the culmination of what we have learned these past four weeks! The students will work in groups of three to create a structure that will be sustainable

and resilient (able to withstand the environmental challenges that the geographic location they are assigned will face). For example, one group is assigned the Louisiana coast, and must create a home that can survive flooding and the hot climate. We then came back upstairs and each group gave a presentation on their reserach and plan for construction. Tomorrow we will start building!
