Day 11: Starting From Scratch
Today was the first day of our electrical and computer engineering week! It was such a busy day! We began the day with our mentors (Michaela and Bridget) teaching our campers a quick introduction to Electrical and Computer Engineering. We then broke up into groups for a more in depth lesson on Computer Engineering and an introduction to Scratch, the computer programming language we used today that was developed at MIT. We then moved downstairs to the computer lab where we worked on a worksheet with Scratch, and finished with an individual project with Scratch, involving coding their own computer games! We went out to the patio for a lunch of Kabob and Curry and then played the Handshake game and a game of ninja.
We went to Prince Lab for a talk from Brown's Cubesat team and a tour of their machining space. The Cubesat members, Sarah and Ryan told us about how they are working with NASA to build a cube-shaped satellite to launch into space and orbit the Earth. After going back up stairs, we finished testing the bones-- "When Chickens Fly" won! We finished watching the Nova on Materials Science ("Making Things Smarter") and then we played the Couch Game-- a new game of memory and logic. Tomorrow we're going to be talking about circuits and breadboarding!
