Day 10: Friday Fun Day!
Today started off with a Do Now question (Do you feel you get out all the energy you put into something?) and discussion. We then moved on to a lesson on thermodynamics led by Bianca and an introduction to our next activity, the battery activity, led by Sophia. After that we moved on to our n
ext project, the battery project. This project consisted of students working in groups of three to make batteries out of common materials, like a potato, a lime, or coins. After testing out all the different types of materials that could make batteries, the campers competed in their groups to see who could make the best battery; that is, the battery that had the highest recorded voltage when measured with a multimeter. The girls came up with some very punny team names! (see our facebook page, Spira Engineering Camp, for a photo of the final voltages that each team was able to make). After finishing that competition we moved on to a quick lesson about gases and the Ideal gas law that set us up for our next project: Alkaseltzer rockets! We then went outside to make alkaseltzer rockets. Danica, Jolyn, and Elsa's team ended up having the rocket that went the highest. We moved over to a field on Brown's campus to eat sandwiches, and brownies made by our lovely mentor, Leslie, for lunch. After lunch we came back inside to the computer lab to fill out evaluations for this week and work on a logic problem written for Brown's discrete math class. After starting to test the casted bones, we headed to the lobby for a yummy surprise... ice cream cooled using liquid nitrogen!!! We had a delicious blast eating the ice cream and enjoying each others' company. We can't wait for next week--Electrical and Computer Engineering!
