Final Field Trip Friday!
Today's lesson dealt with magnetism! Sophia taught the students about magnetic fields and how magnetism and electricity are often taught together in engineering classes. This lesson helped our students creating homopolar motors, which use only a magnet, copper wire, and a battery.
Following our early lunch, the students took a field trip to Sproutel, the engineering company behind Jerry the Bear. Jerry the Bear helps children with Type 1 diabetes. The users learn more about their condition by taking care of Jerry, who has Type 1 diabetes as well. As the users continue to take good care of Jerry, more stories about Jerry are unlocked.
One of the founders, Hannah, talked about how Jerry the Bear started out as a project at Northwestern University and how her current work with Sproutel and Jerry the Bear combines her interests in design, engineering, and art.
After a Q&A session, the students had the opportunity to play with Jerry!
The Sproutel field trip ended our third week of camp. Next week we will go over environmental engineering and have the students complete a final project that will bring together all of what they learned over the past month!
Have a great weekend, readers!
