Programming Wednesday
Today was our third mentor Wednesday of Spira and it was also our first day covering computer science!
Following our Do Now about technology and education, Sophia taught the students about the basics of computer science. She discussed topics like booleans, conditionals, and gates.
After the lesson, we completed our Mentor Wednesday activities outside! We first had the students create Elephant Toothpaste, which is an experiment that involves hydrogen peroxide and dry yeast, acting as a catalyst. The students then worked on more rockets and played games outside until lunch.
Sophia then reviewed yesterday's lesson about circuits and went over a couple more examples.
We then had a guest lecture from Joel, a mechanical engineer who graduated from Brown and now works for a local company called Sproutel. He discussed his research in the field of biomechanics.
We then had students work on an MIT program called Scratch, which was used to introduce students to programming. The students will finish their activites on Scratch tomorrow and then move on to Arduino!
