Biomedical Engineering Thursday

We started the day with a Do-Now about space exploration to wrap up our unit on aerospace engineering. We then went over the Ideal Gas Law and talked about how it related to our rocket activity.

Next, we began our biomedical engineering unit! We started with a brief lesson about the digestive system and then assigned the students an interesting task - create a coating out of vegetable oil, flour, sugar, and/or corn starch for a skittle to simulate how biomedical engineers design and test formulae for medicine coating.

After lunch, we watched a special from PBS called Cracking Your Genetic Code in order to explore the complexity of ethics in engineering, especially in biomedical engineering.

Following our wrap-up discussion about engineering and ethics, the students created s'mores with solar ovens!
