Buckling, Construction, & Industrial Design
Happy Wednesday! We are halfway through the first week of Spira! We started off the day by finishing the balsa wood bridge project and testing the bridges by gradually adding sand to a bucket that hung off of the bottom of the bridges. We added sand until the bridges buckled and measured the amount of weight each bridge held until it buckled. All of the teams created bridges that had a strength to ratio of 100 or higher! All of the students did an amazing job.
We then had our first Mentor Wednesday activity! The students made awesome gingerbread houses as they bonded with their mentors.
After lunch, we had an industrial design lesson taught by Izzy. The students then got to design their own cardboard furniture. The students were split into 3 groups, and each group was assigned to build furniture for a different room in a house. One group made furniture for a bedroom, one made furniture for a nursery, and one made furniture for an office.
Tomorrow the construction of the furniture will be finished and the class will participate in some fascinating chemical engineering projects!
